Navigating the modern physical retro game market: limited edition cartridge reprints, modern retro compilations, and officially licensed hardware cartridges.
1. Overview
Physical video game preservation has enjoyed a tremendous resurgence. Today, retro gamers can choose between comprehensive modern multi-game collections and brand-new physical cartridges made for original retro hardware.
2. 1. Comprehensive Modern Compilations
Anthologies like **Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration**, **TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection**, and **Sonic Origins Plus** pack dozens of titles onto a modern Nintendo Switch or PlayStation disc, augmented by museum galleries, save states, and rewind features.
3. 2. Officially Licensed Hardware Cartridges
Publishers like Atari and Limited Run Games now produce brand-new physical cartridges built to original factory specifications:
- **Mr. Run and Jump**: Manufactured in 2023 for original Atari 2600 consoles and the 2600+.
- **Glover (N64)** and **Shantae (GBC)**: Authentic cartridge reprints playable on original hardware.
4. Final Tip
Check whether a release requires internet downloads or contains the complete game directly on the physical medium. All selections in the Retro Gameforce curated store feature full on-cartridge data.
