Essential Commodore 64 Accessories: Hardware, Keyboards, Audio and Storage

1. Overview

The Commodore 64 remains the best-selling single computer model in computing history. Whether you operate original breadbin hardware, a late-generation C64C, an FPGA implementation like MiSTer, or an emulation suite like VICE, having the right accessories transforms your experience.

2. 1. Modern PETSCII Mechanical Keyboard: 8BitDo C64 Edition

Typing in Commodore 64 BASIC or navigating text adventures on a modern PC often suffers from missing PETSCII graphic character keys. The **8BitDo Retro Mechanical Keyboard (C64 Edition)** features custom dye-sublimated PBT keycaps with front-printed PETSCII graphic glyphs, Kailh Box White clicky switches, and standalone Dual Super Buttons.

3. 2. Zero-Lag Video Scaling: RetroTINK-2X Pro

Connecting an original Commodore 64 to modern flat screens via standard composite cables yields blurry text and color bleed. The **RetroTINK-2X Pro** accepts C64 S-Video and composite signals, line-doubling 240p analog output into crisp 480p digital HDMI with zero input lag and optional CRT scanlines.

4. 3. Authentic DB9 Joysticks: Atari CX40+

Original Commodore 64 games expect standard Atari-compatible 9-pin DB9 joysticks. The newly manufactured **Atari CX40+** joystick features reinforced internal rings that eliminate the common neck breakage of 1970s originals while plugging directly into C64 Control Port 1 and Port 2.

5. 4. Expansion Port and Cartridge Care: CAIG DeoxIT D5

The Commodore 64 user port, expansion cartridge port, and cassette edge connectors are vulnerable to 40 years of copper oxidation. A quick application of **CAIG DeoxIT D5** cleans dirty contacts, dissolves corrosion, and leaves a protective microscopic barrier to prevent future contact degradation.
