Our comprehensive guide to the best modern retro consoles, from real cartridge-reading systems like the Atari 2600+ and 7800+ to dedicated microcomputers and portable handhelds.
1. Overview
For classic gaming enthusiasts, playing on modern high-definition 4K televisions without lag or fuzzy composite video has never been easier. Today’s retro hardware landscape divides into three distinct categories: cartridge-reading hybrid consoles, dedicated replica mini-computers, and physical cartridge ecosystems like Evercade.
2. 1. Cartridge-Reading Consoles: Atari 2600+ and Atari 7800+
If you already own or collect vintage game cartridges, the **Atari 2600+** and **Atari 7800+** represent a breakthrough in modern retro gaming. Unlike software-only mini consoles, these units feature authentic dual-format cartridge slots that read original 1970s and 1980s cartridges directly, outputting clean 720p HDMI video with authentic 4:3 aspect ratios and CRT scanline options.
- **Atari 2600+**: Modeled after the 1980 4-switch CX2600, it includes the iconic DB9 CX40+ joystick and a 10-in-1 cartridge.
- **Atari 7800+**: Adds a wireless CX78+ gamepad and supports both 7800 ProSystem cartridges and 2600 titles.
3. 2. Classic Computer Replicas: THEC64, THEA500, and THE400
For vintage microcomputing fans, Retro Games Ltd’s mini computer lineup offers period-authentic desktop showpieces with full USB sideloading capability:
- **THEC64 Mini**: Compact Commodore 64 with 64 built-in games, micro-switch joystick, and USB support for user D64 and PRG files.
- **THEA500 Mini**: Emulates OCS, ECS, and AGA Commodore Amiga systems (Amiga 500, 600, 1200) with both an Amiga mouse and gamepad.
- **THE400 Mini**: Recreates Atari's 1979 8-bit computer family and 5200 console, bundled with the excellent THECXSTICK joystick.
4. 3. Dedicated Physical Cartridge Systems: Evercade EXP & VS-R
Blaze Entertainment’s Evercade platform offers officially licensed retro multi-game cartridges in numbered plastic clamshell cases with full-color manuals. The **Evercade EXP** handheld features a dedicated TATE mode for vertical arcade shmups, while the **Evercade VS-R** home console provides 1080p HDMI TV output with dual cartridge slots for 4-player couch multiplayer.
5. Key Buying Considerations
- **Original Cartridge Support**: Choose the Atari 2600+ or 7800+ if you want to pop in your own childhood cartridges.
- **Keyboard & Computer Gaming**: Choose THEC64 or THEA500 for vintage home computer experiences with keyboard input.
- **Collector Packaging**: Choose Evercade if you love unboxing physical cartridge collections with printed instruction booklets.
