Mayhem in Monsterland
A late-era masterpiece that makes you forget you're on a C64. A technical showreel and a genuinely great, fast-paced platformer.
Mayhem in Monsterland is one of those games that makes you do a double-take because your brain refuses to accept the date. You load it and think: “Wait… this is C64?” It’s like finding out your old VHS player can suddenly stream 4K. Released late in the machine’s life, it’s a technical flex with the vibes of a Saturday morning cartoon.
First: it looks fantastic. The animation is smooth, the environments are lively, and the whole game has this polished, modern-for-its-era sheen. There’s a clarity to the visuals that makes platforming feel fair. It’s colorful, but not noisy.
Sound is strong too. It goes for upbeat, energetic tunes that match the bright art style. It’s the kind of music that makes failure feel less tragic because the game is basically saying, “Hey buddy, let’s go again.”
Gameplay is where the game becomes genuinely impressive. It’s fast. Like, fast for C64. Your character (a triceratops named Mayhem) can move with serious speed, and the level design accommodates that speed instead of punishing it. Levels have flow.
