ZX81 Dino Jump Turns Sinclair's Tiny Black-and-White Computer Into a One-Button Arcade Challenge

Animated ALex brings one-button arcade reaction gaming to Sinclair's 1981 machine with ZX81 Dino Jump, a compact BASIC endless runner measuring just 3.9KB.

Sinclair's ZX81 has received another genuinely new game with ZX81 Dino Jump from Animated ALex, released just after the previous RetroGameForce checkpoint. The project deliberately keeps its ambitions in line with the extraordinarily limited machine on which it runs. Players control a small dinosaur that must leap over approaching cacti and duck beneath passing pterodactyls, producing a compact endless arcade challenge that can be understood within seconds. The game was programmed in BASIC rather than assembly language and is supplied as a .p file measuring only around 3.9KB. That tiny footprint is entirely appropriate for the ZX81. Sinclair released the computer in 1981 as an aggressively inexpensive successor to the ZX80, and the standard machine famously shipped with only 1KB of RAM. Owners commonly expanded memory through external RAM packs, but even upgraded machines existed in a world where programmers counted individual bytes rather than megabytes. Graphics were similarly austere, using a monochrome character-oriented display generated with heavy involvement from the Z80 processor. The ZX81's reputation for extremely simple games is therefore less a reflection of unimaginative developers than of a machine built around ruthless cost reduction. Animated ALex's new release embraces those restrictions instead of trying to disguise them. Dino Jump is described as a simple coffee-break game, which is arguably exactly the correct design philosophy for the platform. The developer previously produced a ZX Spectrum version of the concept before deciding to adapt it to the older Sinclair machine. Moving backward from Spectrum to ZX81 is an interesting exercise because even an early Spectrum game enjoys substantially more RAM, colour graphics and dedicated display capabilities than its predecessor. Rebuilding a concept for ZX81 therefore requires stripping it back to the essential loop of reaction, timing and survival. The game is available on a name-your-own-price basis and can be loaded into emulators or transferred to compatible original-hardware storage solutions. New ZX81 software rarely produces the visual spectacle associated with modern Amiga, Mega Drive or C64 homebrew, but that misses the appeal. Writing a playable 2026 game in BASIC for one of Britain's earliest mass-market home computers demonstrates that retro development does not require powerful hardware to remain interesting. Sometimes a dinosaur, a cactus and a few kilobytes are enough.
