ZX Spectrum Chiptune Takes First Place at NRG 2026 as Classic Computer Music Celebrates Another Competition

Tomarkus and e!ghtbm win first place in the NRG 2026 chiptune competition with nrg deForm for ZX Spectrum, alongside tracked music victory Past-a-P!ink.

Classic computer music received considerable attention at NRG 2026, where the festival's chiptune competition brought together compositions targeting several historic sound platforms. First place went to nrg deForm by Tomarkus and e!ghtbm, a ZX Spectrum production that received 312 points. Second place was awarded to Clash of Synth by Essential Sound, associated with the Amiga OCS and ECS platform, with 291 points. Third place went to 16 is Enough! by Bartesek, another Amiga-associated production, which earned 274 points. Additional entries included Byteflow for MS-DOS, Royaha for Commodore 64, and several other ZX Spectrum and Amiga compositions. The competition demonstrates the continuing appeal of music created using the limited audio capabilities of vintage computers. Unlike modern digital audio workstations, classic sound hardware often imposes severe restrictions on the number of simultaneous voices, available waveforms and memory capacity. These limitations encourage composers to develop unusual techniques for creating percussion, simulated chords, bass lines and complex melodies. The Commodore 64's SID chip, the Amiga's Paula audio hardware and the sound systems associated with ZX Spectrum computers each offer distinctive musical characteristics. The event also included a separate tracked-music competition, where Past-a-P!ink by Tomarkus and e!ghtbm secured first place with 325 points. Chaos by Essential Sound finished second with 267 points, followed by Unexpected by usual with 225 points. NRG's results illustrate how chiptune composition remains a living creative discipline rather than merely an exercise in nostalgia. Modern musicians have access to practically unlimited processing power and enormous sample libraries. Retro composers frequently achieve remarkable results while working with a handful of channels and restrictions that would make contemporary producers reconsider their career choices.
