Zombie Nest Gives the Game Boy Advance Another New Game in 2026
Developer Enarkz debuts Zombie Nest for Game Boy Advance, adding fresh undead action to Nintendo's 32-bit handheld homebrew community.
Enarkz has added Zombie Nest to the modern Game Boy Advance homebrew catalogue, with the project surfacing on September 29 among the latest releases for Nintendo's 32-bit handheld. That sentence remains slightly surreal. The GBA arrived in 2001, was commercially replaced by the Nintendo DS and has now spent far longer as a retro platform than it did as a current one, yet new software continues to emerge because its hardware occupies a particularly attractive middle ground for hobby developers.
It is powerful enough to support substantial 2D games without requiring the extreme optimisation of an original Game Boy or NES, while remaining constrained enough that creating software for it still feels meaningfully different from making a modern PC indie title at a low resolution. Zombie Nest joins that active aftermarket scene rather than representing an official Nintendo release, but those distinctions matter less to players using flash cartridges, emulators and FPGA devices capable of running new GBA software alongside commercial classics.
Homebrew also has preservation value beyond individual releases: every new project creates more documentation, libraries, tools and practical knowledge around hardware whose original professional development environment might otherwise slowly disappear. Zombies traditionally refuse to stay dead, making them unusually appropriate protagonists for a Game Boy Advance scene displaying exactly the same behavioural problem.
