Wild Paw West Brings Animal-Filled Cowboy Chaos to the Commodore 64 Ultimate as a Free Download
Developer ready64 releases Wild Paw West, a free action-platformer blending western shootouts and animal heroes for the Commodore 64 Ultimate in PRG, D64, and ZIP formats.
The Commodore 64 continues its remarkable refusal to retire, and developer ready64 has contributed another original game to the machine's expanding modern library. Wild Paw West was released on October 15 as a free action-platformer combining Wild West scenery, animal characters and shooting mechanics. Rather than merely borrowing the visual style of an old computer game, this is actual Commodore 64 software, distributed in formats suitable for compatible hardware and emulators. The developer specifically identifies the Commodore 64 Ultimate as the intended platform. Players enter a frontier world populated by animals, where traditional cowboy adventure apparently comes with considerably more fur than usual. The project combines platforming and shooting, with a downloadable manual explaining the controls and gameplay. Distribution options include a PRG program file, a D64 disk image and a complete ZIP package. The developer has also supplied screenshots, cover artwork and a short promotional video. The PRG weighs approximately 30KB, an impressive reminder of how little storage an 8-bit game can occupy. Wild Paw West is a modest independent release rather than a commercial blockbuster, and detailed information about its total length and difficulty remains limited. Nevertheless, its availability represents another welcome addition to the active C64 homebrew scene. Modern hardware recreations have made the platform more accessible, but they need new software to remain interesting beyond nostalgia. Wild Paw West demonstrates that original games are still appearing for a computer introduced in 1982. Apparently the Wild West was never truly conquered. It was simply waiting for someone to arrive with a joystick and a very small amount of memory.
