The Commodore Amiga's essential WHDLoad utility has received version 20.1, accompanied by updates to several game installers. WHDLoad allows software originally designed around floppy disks to run from hard-drive installations while addressing compatibility problems associated with different Amiga configurations. This makes it particularly valuable for enthusiasts using modern storage devices, accelerated systems or emulators. The latest update includes improvements to Prince of Persia, with changes intended to accelerate background restoration, room construction, drawing operations and game logic. Alone in the Dark also receives adjustments designed to produce smoother gameplay and shorter pauses when music changes. Additional installer updates address Slicks 'N' Slide and Hyper Runner, including a fix for a crash that could occur after losing a game. These improvements may sound relatively modest compared with the announcement of a new game, but they represent important preservation work. Many Amiga titles were originally programmed with assumptions about processor timing, disk drives and available memory that became problematic on later machines. WHDLoad helps bridge those differences without requiring every game to be rewritten. The project also makes large collections more practical by reducing dependence on ageing floppy disks. Version 20.1 continues that work rather than introducing an entirely new emulation system. For Amiga collectors, fewer crashes and shorter loading interruptions are welcome developments. After spending decades listening to floppy drives grind through complicated loading sequences, enthusiasts have probably earned a little peace and quiet.
