Virtual Calais XXL Opens a Two-Day French Celebration of Games, Technology and Gaming History
Virtual Calais XXL opens October 3–4 at the Gambetta Forum in Calais, France, celebrating video game history, arcades, VR, robotics, and pop culture.
Virtual Calais XXL opens today at the Gambetta Forum in Calais, France, running across October 3 and 4. The event has existed since 2010 and has grown into a broad gaming and digital-culture gathering rather than a narrowly retro convention, but classic gaming remains part of its appeal alongside modern games, virtual reality, robotics, cosplay and appearances connected with videogame culture. The 2026 edition gives visitors hands-on access to technology and gaming activities throughout the weekend, with the venue transformed into what organisers describe as an XXL playground.
Events like this matter to retro gaming for a reason that does not always fit neatly into hardware specifications. Classic games survive partly because people continue encountering them in public rather than exclusively through ROM folders and YouTube documentaries. A teenager discovering an old arcade game at an event has a very different relationship with it from somebody reading that the machine was historically important.
Virtual Calais also illustrates how retro gaming has stopped being a sealed-off nostalgia category and become one strand of a much broader videogame culture. Forty-year-old ideas now sit comfortably beside VR headsets and humanoid robots. The robots may have better graphics, but Pac-Man still has considerably clearer objectives.
