The Game Boy Advance has received one of the more technically intriguing homebrew projects of 2026 with VECTOR, a Portal-inspired puzzle game written specifically for Nintendo's 2001 handheld. PDRoms added the project to its Game Boy Advance news feed on 6 September, following several rapid development updates from creator charger0277. Unlike the countless modern games that merely imitate 16-bit or 32-bit aesthetics, VECTOR is supplied as an actual .gba ROM and is intended to run on original hardware, flash cartridges and emulators. The central mechanic will immediately be familiar to Portal players: the user places orange and blue portals onto suitable surfaces and travels between them while preserving momentum. That concept sounds straightforward until one remembers the target machine has a 240 by 160 display, no floating-point hardware, no divide instruction and only 96 KB of video memory. The project currently includes puzzle chambers featuring cubes, switches, doors, turrets, lasers, elevators and moving platforms. Development has also moved quickly. Earlier builds contained six chambers, while subsequent versions expanded the demo to twelve redesigned rooms, introduced camera movement and refined the physical feeling of the player character. The developer has described how tiny animation details, landing movement and environmental reactions are being used to give the character a sense of weight despite the machine's severe limitations. Perhaps most impressively, much of the visual content is generated procedurally rather than relying on conventional hand-drawn asset pipelines. Room layouts are stored in compact text representations, while development tools can rebuild the GBA data after level editing. VECTOR remains explicitly a work in progress rather than a finished commercial game, but that arguably makes it more fascinating to follow. We are effectively watching a developer work through the same sort of hardware restrictions that professional studios confronted during the GBA era, only with another quarter-century of programming knowledge available. Portal on a Game Boy Advance should be ridiculous. The fact that it works at all is precisely why homebrew development remains so entertaining.
