Van Helsing Launches on Commodore 64 With Eight Levels of Gothic Horror and Dracula-Hunting Action
Psytronik Software releases GriffonSoft's Van Helsing for Commodore 64, an 8-level scrolling gothic action adventure to hunt Dracula across Transylvania.
The Commodore 64 has received another substantial commercial homebrew release just in time for Halloween. Psytronik Software launched Van Helsing on October 31, bringing GriffonSoft's gothic action adventure to Commodore's legendary eight-bit computer. Set in autumn 1893, the story begins in London as guests gather at the Harker residence following Jonathan Harker's return from Transylvania. Unfortunately, the celebration ends rather abruptly when a mysterious creature abducts Lucy Westenra and disappears into the night. Van Helsing sets out to rescue Lucy and confront Dracula, embarking on an adventure spanning eight scrolling levels. The developers have placed considerable emphasis on detailed background artwork, responsive controls and carefully animated characters. Players encounter hostile creatures, navigate dangerous environments and collect different weapons to overcome increasingly difficult challenges. Psytronik describes the project as GriffonSoft's most ambitious Commodore 64 title to date. The game is available digitally for $4.99 through the publisher's itch.io store, with downloads including CRT, D64, TAP and PRG formats. The digital package also includes soundtrack material and remixes, while physical editions are available separately through Psytronik's official store. These multiple formats give enthusiasts several options for playing on original hardware, compatible modern Commodore recreations and emulators. The release continues Psytronik's support for contemporary eight-bit development and demonstrates that ambitious action adventures remain commercially viable on classic platforms. Dracula has survived numerous generations of videogame hardware, but apparently he has never encountered an opponent quite as persistent as a Commodore 64 owner armed with a joystick.
