Classic Doom-family gaming on modern Macs has received a fresh compatibility option today with a new Mac Source Ports build of UZDoom 5.0.1 dated 9 September 2026. The package is distributed as a Universal 2 application supporting both Apple Silicon and 64-bit Intel Macs, is signed and notarized for contemporary macOS security requirements, and requires macOS 10.13 or later. The underlying UZDoom 5.0.1 source-port release itself arrived several days earlier, so today's news specifically concerns this newly prepared Mac build rather than claiming that version 5.0.1 was first released on 9 September. UZDoom continues the extraordinarily long tradition of community-maintained Doom source ports that followed id Software's decision to publish the engine source code. Like its relatives in the ZDoom family, it provides a modern runtime capable of playing multiple games derived from id's technology while adding support for contemporary operating systems, rendering options, controls and extensive community modifications. The Mac Source Ports package lists compatibility with Doom, Doom II, Final Doom, Heretic, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, Strife and the Chex Quest Trilogy. Users still need the appropriate original game data files, commonly known as IWADs, because the port itself does not provide the copyrighted commercial game assets. Universal packaging matters more than it might appear.
