Urban Reign PC Port Expands Local Multiplayer to Eight Fighters

Namco's cult PlayStation 2 fighting game Urban Reign has received a substantial update through an unofficial Windows conversion project. The latest development expands local multiplayer support from four participants to eight, creating considerably more chaotic encounters than the original console release allowed. Urban Reign originally appeared in 2005 and combined three-dimensional arena fighting with elements of traditional beat-'em-up games. Players controlled Brad Hawk, a hired fighter navigating criminal conflicts in the fictional city of Green Harbor. Its combat system emphasised counters, grappling, environmental attacks and cooperation between characters. The unofficial PC project already provides modern display options and controller support, but the latest changes concentrate on multiplayer. Eight human-controlled fighters can now participate in free-for-all battles or team encounters. The expanded player count requires additional controller configuration through the project's CoopTool functionality. Developers have also addressed problems affecting character moves and animations when more than four fighters appeared simultaneously. Some limitations remain, including the absence of individual health bars for additional participants and occasional incorrect move assignments. The multiplayer expansion is local rather than online, so players will need enough controllers and friends in the same room. Users must also provide compatible original game data. This is not an authorised Bandai Namco release. Nevertheless, the project offers a meaningful enhancement to a fighting game that never received an official PC version. Urban Reign was already capable of turning a crowded arena into complete chaos. Doubling the number of human players seems unlikely to improve the situation.
