Transparent ModRetro Chromatics Are Official, With Four See-Through Handhelds Launching October 8

ModRetro officially announces four translucent Chromatic handhelds in purple, green, red, and smoke launching October 8, reviving late-90s transparent electronics.

ModRetro has officially revealed its Transparent Chromatics range after several weeks in which the secret was approximately as well concealed as a Game Boy with a transparent shell. Four translucent versions of the cartridge-based Chromatic handheld are planned in purple, green, red and smoke, with sales scheduled to begin October 8 at 9:30 AM Pacific Time. The new cases deliberately revisit the transparent-electronics craze of the late 1990s and early 2000s, when being able to see a circuit board apparently made every piece of consumer electronics approximately 37 percent cooler. The underlying Chromatic concept remains focused on Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, combining modern display technology with compatibility for original software. Current reporting indicates that the internal hardware and control arrangement are expected to remain broadly consistent with existing Chromatic models; final pricing and some material details had not yet been comprehensively published at today's cutoff. The announcement is nevertheless significant because it turns previously circulating leaks and placeholder pages into an actual product launch. Boutique retro hardware increasingly sells on industrial design as much as emulation or FPGA credentials, and transparent plastic has become shorthand for 'yes, we also owned electronics in 1999.' Buyers only need to survive until Thursday before discovering whether nostalgia can, once again, be seen directly through the case.
