Toxic Crusaders Releases Playable Steam Demo Ahead of Retro Beat-'Em-Up Launch

Retroware launches a playable Steam demo for Toxic Crusaders, featuring 4-player co-op, colorful pixel art, and comic-style brawling across Tromaville.

Retroware has released a playable Steam demonstration of Toxic Crusaders, its upcoming side-scrolling beat-'em-up based on the eccentric animated series of the early 1990s. The game revisits the environmentally conscious mutants who emerged from Troma's considerably less family-friendly Toxic Avenger franchise. Players can control characters including Toxie, Yvonne, Junkyard and Headbanger as they battle the forces of the villainous Dr. Killemoff. The complete game is planned to feature seven stages, cooperative action for up to four players, motion-comic storytelling and extensive voice acting. Its colourful pixel-art presentation deliberately recalls the arcade beat-'em-ups that became popular during the original television show's era. Toxic Crusaders was first announced in 2023, making the arrival of a playable demonstration a meaningful milestone after a lengthy development period. The game follows a broader revival of cooperative arcade fighting, encouraged by the success of titles such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. However, the new demo should be evaluated independently rather than assuming that familiar characters and nostalgic presentation automatically guarantee enjoyable combat. Retroware is developing Toxic Crusaders for PC, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch platforms. A final release date has not been established in the latest announcement. The project is particularly interesting because Toxic Crusaders previously received videogame adaptations during the 8-bit and 16-bit eras. This new interpretation attempts to recreate the energetic arcade experience that the original television property arguably deserved. The mutant heroes are returning to clean up the streets, although judging by the screenshots, their environmental protection strategy still involves hitting absolutely everything with a mop.
