Thief: The Dark Project Remastered Shows Its Shadows in Extended Gameplay
Nightdive's Thief remaster has received an extended gameplay showing, demonstrating its upgraded lighting, models and textures while preserving the 1998 game's stealth-first design.
Nightdive Studios has let Thief: The Dark Project Remastered out of the shadows for a substantially longer look at actual play. The new footage shown around the PC Gaming Show Tokyo Direct revisits the sort of places Garrett has always preferred to visit after the owners have gone to bed: mansions, sewers, crypts, tombs and other architecture with conveniently poor lighting.
The important part is that it still looks like Thief rather than an action game wearing Thief's coat. Light, sound, patience and line of sight remain the centre of the experience, while Nightdive's KEX Engine supplies upgraded textures, models, animation and lighting. Modern controller support adds a weapon-and-item wheel, and the official specification targets up to 4K at 120 FPS on capable hardware.
Nightdive also confirms that the package includes the original twelve missions plus the three additional missions and other material from Thief Gold. A mission selector, achievements and built-in custom-campaign support are among the quality-of-life additions.
There is still no exact release date on the official product page, so any calendar certainty would be premature. What the new footage does provide is something more useful: evidence that the remaster is trying to polish Looking Glass's stealth systems rather than sand them into something safer. Garrett may be shinier. His working hours remain deeply antisocial.
