The New Zealand Story Receives Native macOS Conversion Based on Its Original Amiga Code
A new open-source Swift project translates 1989 Amiga 68000 code into a native macOS port of Taito's classic platformer The New Zealand Story.
Tiki the kiwi has found another platform to explore, almost four decades after his original arcade debut. An independent development project has produced a native macOS adaptation of The New Zealand Story, using the 1989 Commodore Amiga version as its technical foundation. The project received fresh specialist coverage on October 17 and is available through a public source-code repository.
Originally developed by Taito in 1988, The New Zealand Story follows a small yellow kiwi attempting to rescue his kidnapped friends. Its colourful environments conceal a surprisingly demanding platform adventure involving dangerous enemies, complicated routes and unusual vehicles. The Amiga adaptation became one of several popular home-computer conversions.
Rather than rebuilding the game from visual references, the new macOS project translates the original Amiga program's Motorola 68000 instructions into Swift code. This approach aims to preserve enemy behaviour, collision detection and level progression while allowing the software to run directly on modern Apple computers. The project also introduces practical conveniences including keyboard and gamepad support, adjustable display modes and quick saving.
There is an important limitation: the repository does not contain the commercial game itself. Users must provide a compatible original Amiga disk image and compile the application using the required development tools. The project targets macOS 14 or newer and requires Swift 6. It is therefore more suitable for technically confident enthusiasts than casual players seeking a simple installer. Nevertheless, the conversion demonstrates how original game code can be adapted to modern operating systems without recreating an entire vintage computer. Tiki has survived sharks, monsters and enormous bosses. Learning to operate on a modern Mac should be relatively straightforward by comparison.
