The King's Return Brings a New Medieval Adventure to Physical Game Boy Color Cartridges

The Game Boy Color continues attracting developers who believe Nintendo's ageing handheld deserves genuinely new software rather than another collection of familiar ROMs. French developer Towea has created The King's Return, a medieval action-platformer published physically by Broke Studio. The game follows the King of Towea, who returns from a crusade to discover that his kingdom has been overrun, his subjects have disappeared and his former Chamberlain has seized control. Restoring order requires travelling through six worlds, fighting monsters and recovering the souls of the missing population. The adventure combines traditional platforming with forced-scrolling sequences and shoot-'em-up elements, introducing variety beyond straightforward jumping and sword fighting. Additional features include a Boss Rush mode, unlockable content and a music player. The physical edition includes a Game Boy Color-compatible cartridge, illustrated instruction booklet and sticker sheet, providing the kind of complete package associated with the handheld's original commercial era. The announced retail price is approximately €50, although availability may fluctuate as individual production batches sell through. A browser-based demonstration is also available through the developer. The King's Return demonstrates the continuing appeal of producing software specifically for original handheld hardware. Modern tools make development more accessible, but fitting an ambitious adventure into the Game Boy Color's limitations still requires careful design. Nintendo discontinued the handheld long ago. Fortunately, nobody appears to have informed its growing community of independent developers.
