The Addams Family's Missing Amiga Backgrounds Are Coming Back 34 Years Later

DJ Mike announces The Addams Family: Backgrounds Edition for OCS and AGA Amigas, restoring original unrendered background graphics hidden in the 1992 Ocean code.

Ocean's 1992 Amiga version of The Addams Family is receiving a rather extraordinary historical correction. Developer DJ Mike has announced The Addams Family: Backgrounds Edition for OCS and AGA Amigas, with release planned for October. The project tackles one of the conspicuous visual differences between the Amiga game and versions on competing machines: large portions of the Amiga release shipped without the detailed background artwork players could see elsewhere.

What makes the restoration fascinating is the reason uncovered while reverse-engineering the game. According to the project report, code for rendering backgrounds was apparently already present in the original Amiga program, but the resulting graphics were subsequently ignored or overwritten before reaching the screen. In other words, this is less a case of painting scenery onto an old game and more like discovering that somebody fitted curtains in 1992 and then inexplicably nailed plywood over the windows.

DJ Mike has modified the original code to restore background presentation while retaining compatibility across classic Amiga configurations, including OCS and AGA machines. Projects such as this occupy an interesting middle ground between modding and software archaeology: the aim is not to remake a familiar game with modern graphics but to understand the original program well enough to expose capabilities that never appeared in the commercial release. Thirty-four years late is admittedly poor punctuality, but for Amiga owners it is still preferable to never.
