Tetris ZX Recreates the Game Boy Classic on ZX Spectrum 48K and 128K With Competitive Two-Player Mode
Developer Kirby2000 releases Tetris ZX v1.0.0 for ZX Spectrum 48K and 128K, recreating the Game Boy classic with competitive two-player mode and AY audio.
The ZX Spectrum has received another ambitious conversion of a famous handheld game, with developer Kirby2000 releasing Tetris ZX version 1.0.0 for both 48K and 128K machines. Rather than simply providing a basic falling-block puzzle game, the new project attempts to recreate the distinctive atmosphere and gameplay options of the original Game Boy edition. Three modes are included. Game A provides the traditional endless scoring challenge, with falling blocks accelerating as players progress. Game B allows players to select a starting level and height before attempting to clear twenty-five lines. A competitive two-player mode introduces an additional challenge, requiring participants to clear thirty lines or force their opponent's blocks to reach the top of the playing field. Clearing multiple rows sends additional lines to the opposing board, with the first player to win five rounds claiming victory. The release includes original-style monochrome presentation, high-score entry, familiar ending sequences and an additional faster challenge mode. Hardware-specific audio support distinguishes the two versions. The 48K edition uses the Spectrum's beeper for music and sound effects, while the 128K version takes advantage of AY audio, including special danger music when the playing field becomes crowded. Keyboard, Sinclair joystick and Kempston controls are supported. Downloads include TAP tape images, Z80 snapshots, instructions and printable cassette artwork. The developer identifies the project as an unofficial fan conversion and discloses AI assistance with programming and text. Tetris has appeared on practically everything capable of displaying rectangles, but watching the Game Boy version find another home on Sinclair hardware remains strangely satisfying.
