Hardware developer Taki Udon has revealed further progress on the FPGBA SP, an experimental FPGA-powered handheld inspired by Nintendo's Game Boy Advance SP. New demonstration footage highlights the device's evolving software interface, including features designed to make original cartridge gaming more convenient. The prototype supports genuine Game Boy Advance cartridges rather than relying exclusively on downloaded game files. Its menu system is being developed to provide save states, screen scaling, visual filters and screenshot functionality. The latest footage also demonstrates work on cartridge-loading performance, an important consideration for a device intended to reproduce the familiar experience of inserting physical games. FPGA technology uses programmable logic to recreate hardware behaviour, distinguishing the project from conventional Android handhelds running software emulators. However, implementation quality remains important, and an FPGA design should not automatically be assumed to reproduce every detail of original hardware perfectly. Taki has previously expressed an ambition to offer the device for approximately $100, although that remains a development target rather than a confirmed retail price. No release date has been announced. A conventional Game Boy Advance-style model is also under consideration. The FPGBA SP enters an increasingly competitive market containing sophisticated emulation handhelds and established cartridge-compatible FPGA products. Its potential advantage could be the combination of authentic cartridge support, modern convenience features and comparatively affordable pricing. For now, the project remains an interesting prototype. Collectors should resist making room on their shelves until the manufacturer provides actual ordering information.
