Super Smash Bros. 64 Gets an Unofficial Native Sega Dreamcast Port With Four-Player Support
Developers reveal an unofficial native Dreamcast recompilation port of Super Smash Bros. 64 running at 60 FPS in 480p with four-player support and VMU saves.
Nintendo's original Super Smash Bros. has appeared on an unlikely new platform through an unofficial native conversion for Sega's Dreamcast. Newly documented on October 10, the project adapts the 1999 Nintendo 64 fighting game to run directly on Dreamcast hardware rather than through conventional Nintendo 64 emulation. The current build preserves the original roster of twelve playable characters, familiar stages and four-player multiplayer structure. Developers have adapted graphics, audio, controls and game-data handling to accommodate the substantial architectural differences between Nintendo's cartridge-based console and Sega's disc-oriented machine. The Dreamcast version offers higher-resolution rendering, with 480i and 480p display options, and targets smooth 60-frame-per-second gameplay. Controller mappings have been adjusted for Sega's hardware, while progress can be saved to a Visual Memory Unit. The project remains unfinished, with developers still addressing visual differences involving colour, transparency and other rendering details. Players must also supply legally obtained original Nintendo 64 game data and follow the project's build instructions. The developers do not distribute Nintendo's copyrighted commercial game as a ready-made Dreamcast disc. This is an important distinction because native recompilation and porting projects can provide valuable preservation benefits without necessarily including the original proprietary assets. Super Smash Bros. is an especially interesting candidate because its straightforward controls and multiplayer emphasis suit the Dreamcast remarkably well. During the late 1990s, Sega and Nintendo competed fiercely for console players. In 2026, enthusiasts are apparently arranging the crossover nobody expected: Nintendo's most famous fighting party arriving on Sega's final home console.
