Super Mario Sunshine Online 2.0 Adds New Characters, Game Modes and Support for Major GameCube Mods
Daytendo 64 launches Better Super Mario Sunshine Online 2.0 on Dolphin, adding Peach, Daisy, Toad, Tag, Geoguessr, and support for major GameCube mods.
Super Mario Sunshine's thriving modification community has received another substantial release with version 2.0 of Better Super Mario Sunshine Online. Created by Daytendo 64, the project expands multiplayer functionality for the original GameCube adventure through the Dolphin emulator on Windows. The update was unveiled during the community's Sunshine Showcase presentation on October 24, with its expanded features receiving additional coverage on October 26. The most significant improvement is broader compatibility with existing Sunshine modifications, including Super Mario Eclipse, Super Mario Sunset, Super Mario Tropical Freeze and Azack's Super Mario Sunshine Randomiser. This allows players to experience additional fan-created content together rather than restricting multiplayer sessions to the original adventure. New competitive and social modes include Tag, Geoguessr, Manhunt and Speedrun, providing alternatives to conventional cooperative progression. The character selection has also expanded substantially, introducing models based on Peach, Daisy, Toad, Toadette, Toadsworth, Professor E. Gadd, Amy Rose and Silver the Hedgehog. Additional character options are available when using compatible expansion modifications. Dedicated social areas, including a new lobby, accompany various stability fixes and performance improvements. The underlying project previously introduced online cooperative play for up to ten participants, with shared progression for Shine Sprites, blue coins and other adventure objectives. As an unofficial community modification, Better Super Mario Sunshine Online is separate from Nintendo and should not be mistaken for an officially supported multiplayer edition. The update demonstrates how much additional life fans can bring to older games through determined technical experimentation. The original Super Mario Sunshine was already memorable for sending Mario on a tropical holiday that somehow involved cleaning an entire island. Now he can invite several friends along to share the workload, which sounds considerably more sensible.
