Super Mario Kart Deluxe Targets Christmas Release as Developers Reveal an Extraordinary SNES Expansion

Developers MrL314 and ScouB announce Super Mario Kart Deluxe for December 25, 2026, a massive SNES ROM hack adding Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, and new courses.

One of the most ambitious ROM-hacking projects ever attempted for Nintendo's original Super Mario Kart is approaching completion. Developers MrL314 and ScouB have confirmed that Super Mario Kart Deluxe is targeting December 25, 2026, and a detailed interview published on October 11 reveals just how extensively the team has expanded the 1992 Super Nintendo classic. The project introduces new characters, additional tracks, expanded racing modes, new items and numerous gameplay improvements while preserving the original game's content. That final detail is important because the developers want players to experience the familiar Super Mario Kart alongside the new material rather than replacing existing features. New racers include characters such as Wario, Waluigi, Daisy and Toadette, while additional items draw inspiration from later Mario Kart games and other Nintendo classics. The developers have also experimented with unused concepts discovered inside the original game's code. One particularly fascinating finding involves a camera positioning discrepancy of approximately one degree, which had little effect on normal racing but created problems when the team introduced more demanding mission objectives. New environments include Daisy Garden, Hazy Cavern, Fiery Volcano and Stormy Jungle, with environmental effects and gameplay mechanics extending beyond simple visual changes. The project also introduces new racing classes, multiplayer options and other improvements. According to the developers, the ROM hack is intended to work on authentic SNES hardware as well as compatible emulators, although players must supply their own legitimate original game data. The December release remains a target rather than proof that development is finished. Nevertheless, Super Mario Kart Deluxe demonstrates the extraordinary technical understanding that dedicated ROM hackers can develop through years of experimentation. Nintendo created an enormously influential racing game in 1992. More than thirty years later, enthusiasts are still discovering ways to make its tiny karts do things nobody originally imagined.
