Stacker Adds Another New Puzzle Challenge to the ZX Spectrum's 2026 Homebrew Library

The ZX Spectrum receives another new game today with Stacker from developer Animated ALex. Added to PDRoms' Spectrum feed on 12 September, Stacker presents a compact arcade puzzle built around moving platforms and carefully placing boxes while racing against the clock. The objective requires the player to avoid dangerous moving platforms and position two boxes into designated gaps near the top of the screen before time expires. Boxes that have already been collected or stacked occupy a holding area, turning the apparently straightforward task into a problem of movement, timing and spatial planning. Public information about Stacker remains limited compared with larger homebrew releases, so it is important not to invent an elaborate feature list that the developer has not announced. What can be said confidently is that it is genuine new ZX Spectrum software appearing in 2026, joining one of the most consistently active 8-bit development scenes in Europe. The Spectrum is especially well suited to compact puzzle designs. Its 256 by 192 pixel bitmap and famous attribute-colour system create visual limitations that can become liabilities for scrolling arcade conversions but work perfectly well for fixed-screen challenges where objects need to be instantly readable. A game built around boxes, gaps and moving platforms does not need hundreds of animation frames to communicate its rules. More importantly, modern Spectrum homebrew does not exist in isolation. Developers now have access to mature assemblers, C compilers, BASIC compilers, graphics tools, emulators and flash-storage devices, while original machines remain common enough that software can be tested on genuine hardware. Distribution is equally simple: a finished tape or snapshot image can be uploaded globally in seconds. That combination has created an environment where small experimental ideas can reach players without the economics of physical publishing. Stacker may not be the sprawling RPG or technical demo that dominates screenshots, but games like this are arguably closer to the spirit of early microcomputer development. A programmer has an idea, reduces it to a readable set of rules and puts it onto a machine with very little room for waste. In a week already containing new Spectrum tooling and active FPGA projects, another original game reinforces the impression that Sinclair's computer remains an actual development target rather than merely a historical curiosity.
