Sonic 3 Unlocked Demo Brings Encore Mode and New Playable Characters to Sega Mega Drive

Developer Lilliam releases Sonic 3 Unlocked demo for Sonic Hacking Contest 2026, bringing Amy, Mighty, Ray, and Encore Mode concepts to the Sega Mega Drive.

The Sonic Hacking Contest 2026 has delivered another ambitious ROM modification, and this particular project attempts to bring ideas from modern Sonic games back to the original Sega Mega Drive. Developer Lilliam has released a playable demonstration of Sonic 3 Unlocked, an extensive enhancement of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Rather than simply changing level layouts or replacing character sprites, the modification aims to incorporate gameplay concepts from Sonic Mania Plus and Sonic Origins into the original 16-bit adventure. New playable characters include Amy Rose, Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel. Their graphics have been adapted to work within the Mega Drive's limited colour palette, with additional animation work where necessary. Another major planned feature is Encore Mode, allowing players to experience altered versions of familiar stages while switching between a growing group of playable characters. The project also introduces bug fixes, quality-of-life improvements and additional secrets, including cutscene-skipping options and unlockable abilities. However, the developer emphasises that the available demonstration represents only part of the intended final experience. Alternative level palettes for Encore Mode were not completed in time for the demo, while additional Special Stages and revised item-monitor behaviour remain planned. Sonic 3 Unlocked draws inspiration from earlier community projects such as Sonic 3 Complete and Sonic 3: Angel Island Revisited. It is an unofficial fan modification rather than a Sega-authorised commercial release. The project demonstrates how much creative potential remains in the original Mega Drive engine. Sonic spent decades becoming faster, larger and more complicated. His fans are now determined to bring the improvements back to the cartridge that helped make him famous.
