Snapman 20 Pushes the VIC-20 With an Assembly-Coded Pac-Man Conversion and Arcade Ghost Behaviour

Commodore's VIC-20 has received a remarkably ambitious new Pac-Man-style game with Snapman 20 from developer Beamrider. Written entirely in machine assembly, the release attempts to reproduce much more of Namco's original arcade behaviour than one might expect from Commodore's first million-selling home computer. Most notably, Beamrider has implemented ghost movement patterns modelled on the arcade original and retained the memorable intermission sequences appearing between groups of mazes. The price for that ambition is memory: Snapman 20 requires a PAL VIC-20 fitted with a 35K expansion. That pushes the little machine far beyond the 5KB of RAM supplied in its standard 1980 configuration. Pac-Man clones have been part of home-computer culture almost from the moment Namco's arcade game became popular. During the early 1980s, developers produced countless interpretations under names that were just different enough to avoid direct licensing problems. The name Snapman itself has historical precedent, appearing in earlier British microcomputer clones. Beamrider's 2026 release deliberately reconnects with that tradition while using modern understanding of Pac-Man's internal logic. The original arcade ghosts are not simply random enemies. Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde follow different targeting rules that produce the illusion of distinct personalities. Accurately reproducing those patterns is one of the most important differences between a superficial maze clone and something that actually feels like Pac-Man. Doing so on a VIC-20 involves severe restrictions on memory, display hardware and processing time. Expansion RAM alleviates storage pressure but does not transform the VIC chip into a later sprite engine. That makes the conversion an interesting programming exercise even for players who have no shortage of ways to run Pac-Man elsewhere. Nobody needs a VIC-20 version for convenience; virtually every modern device can emulate the arcade game perfectly. What Snapman 20 offers instead is an answer to a classic homebrew question: how closely can an early home computer approximate a famous arcade machine if the programmer is given forty years of accumulated knowledge and no commercial deadline? Beamrider's answer appears surprisingly close, and the project gives VIC-20 owners another reason to keep those RAM expansions plugged in.
