Sega Unveils House of the Dead Reawakened as an Enormous Two-Player VR Arcade Horror Attraction
Sega Amusements International reveals House of the Dead: Reawakened, an attendant-free two-player VR arcade horror attraction using Unreal Engine 5.
Sega Amusements International has revealed substantial new details about House of the Dead: Reawakened, an ambitious virtual-reality arcade attraction designed to revive one of gaming's most recognisable horror franchises. The company released new footage and technical information on October 28, confirming that the machine will receive a public demonstration at IAAPA Orlando from November 17 to 20, 2026. Rather than creating another conventional light-gun cabinet, Sega has designed a large themed attraction resembling a haunted mansion. The structure incorporates an enormous 85-inch central display and two additional 43-inch vertical screens representing shuttered windows. Animated lighting, gothic decorations and a working clock tower contribute to the presentation. The attraction uses Unreal Engine 5 and commercial DPVR E4C virtual-reality headsets, allowing players to experience the action from inside the horror environments. Up to two participants can tackle three missions, either individually or cooperatively. Weapon controllers feature haptic recoil, while each player receives dedicated 2.1-channel audio intended to reinforce the atmosphere. Sega has also addressed practical concerns from arcade operators. A reinforced headset cable harness developed with DPVR has reportedly survived load testing at approximately 130 kilograms of force. The company is backing the cable assembly with a twelve-month warranty. Sega describes the attraction as attendant-free, potentially reducing staffing requirements for amusement venues. The announcement arrives ahead of the franchise's thirtieth anniversary in 2027. The original House of the Dead debuted in arcades in 1997 and helped establish horror-themed light-gun shooters as a major attraction. No confirmed general installation date or cabinet price has been announced. Reawakened nevertheless represents a substantial new investment in location-based arcade entertainment. Apparently Sega has decided that shooting zombies on a television is no longer frightening enough. Now the monsters can surround you.
