Sega Mega Drive owners are finally receiving a conversion of the original Rolling Thunder, despite the console having hosted both Rolling Thunder 2 and Rolling Thunder 3 during its commercial lifetime. Developer Rester159 has released version 0.8 Alpha of Rolling Thunder MD, an ambitious unofficial adaptation of Namco's 1986 arcade game. The original introduced secret agent Albatross, who must infiltrate the criminal organisation Geldra and rescue fellow agent Leila Blitz. Its distinctive gameplay combines shooting, platform movement and careful use of doorways that provide temporary shelter from enemies. The new Mega Drive version includes the original ten arcade areas, organised into two five-stage stories. It also introduces additional features unavailable in the original arcade release. Leila becomes a playable character, while two-player cooperative gameplay allows both agents to fight through the campaign together. A separate Survival mode rearranges sections of familiar environments into increasingly difficult encounters. The conversion uses native Motorola 68000 code and a custom audio implementation designed for Sega's hardware. Performance remains under development, particularly during crowded cooperative sessions. The developer reports that frame rates can drop noticeably when numerous enemies are present, and compatibility with original hardware requires broader verification. Nevertheless, the alpha already represents a substantial playable project rather than a simple graphics demonstration. Rolling Thunder was famous for encouraging players to take cover and manage ammunition carefully. Adding a second agent should make survival easier, although anyone who has played cooperative arcade games knows that friendship can become remarkably fragile when ammunition starts running low.
