Ribbit Rush Turns the ZX Spectrum Next Into a Colourful Frogger Machine With Nine-Channel Music

Developer roman126 releases Ribbit Rush for the ZX Spectrum Next, delivering a modern 50fps Frogger-style arcade game featuring 320x256 graphics and 9-channel TurboSound Next audio.

Developer roman126 has released Ribbit Rush for the ZX Spectrum Next, delivering a modern interpretation of the classic frog-crossing arcade formula with considerably more audiovisual enthusiasm than the original Frogger ever enjoyed. Published on October 7, the game challenges players to guide five frogs across dangerous roads and rivers while avoiding vehicles, crocodiles, snakes and disappearing turtles. The presentation uses the Spectrum Next's enhanced capabilities, including full-screen 320-by-256 graphics, hardware sprites and smooth 50fps gameplay. Day, dusk and night environments introduce changing colours and atmospheric effects, while the soundtrack takes advantage of all nine channels of TurboSound Next. Eight original chiptunes are included, along with a title-screen jukebox for players who would rather listen to the music than repeatedly become roadkill. Modern additions include temporary shields, time-freezing abilities, longer jumps, collectible gems and a combo multiplier rewarding quick forward movement. A special Firefly Frenzy bonus stage appears after every third level. The game is distributed as a NEX file for original Spectrum Next hardware or compatible emulators, with Kempston joystick and keyboard controls supported. Players using emulation must enable the appropriate three-chip audio configuration to hear the complete soundtrack. Ribbit Rush is a good demonstration of why the Spectrum Next remains interesting: developers can revisit familiar arcade concepts while exploiting hardware capabilities that the original rubber-keyed Spectrum could only have dreamed about. The frogs, unfortunately, remain every bit as vulnerable to traffic.
