Resistance 2 Multiplayer Is Coming Back From the Dead on Community Servers

PS Rewired restores online multiplayer for Insomniac's PlayStation 3 shooter Resistance 2, bringing competitive modes and co-op back on real PS3 hardware and RPCS3.

Another piece of PlayStation 3 online history is being dragged back onto the network. Community preservation group PS Rewired has added Resistance 2 support to its replacement-server infrastructure, with players reporting working multiplayer sessions on both original PS3 hardware and the RPCS3 emulator.

Insomniac's 2008 shooter was particularly notable online because it went considerably beyond ordinary deathmatch: competitive multiplayer supported huge battles while its separate cooperative mode offered eight-player missions with dedicated Soldier, Special Ops and Medic roles. Sony shut the official Resistance servers in 2014, turning a significant portion of the game into inaccessible history unless somebody recreated the missing network infrastructure.

Recent community testing has now produced functioning competitive sessions and experimental cooperative play, although reports indicate that parts of co-op remain rough and the restoration should still be treated as an active preservation project rather than a perfectly invisible replacement for Sony's original service. PS Rewired's current setup documentation explicitly includes the Resistance 2 server domain among its supported titles. These projects are increasingly important because online console games present a preservation problem cartridges never did: possessing the disc does not preserve the server it expected to contact. When that infrastructure disappears, entire modes can effectively vanish while the game sits perfectly intact on your shelf. Resistance 2 is therefore doing something suitably appropriate for its title: resisting.
