One of today's most gloriously obscure FPGA developments concerns the RCA Studio II, a console so comprehensively overshadowed by later machines that many players have never seen one outside a museum or retro-computing article. RetroRGB's 6 September MiSTer roundup reports on a core supporting not only the original Studio II but also related systems including the colour-capable Studio III, also known as the MPT-02, and the Visicom COM-100. The core provides full monochrome NTSC support for the Studio II, PAL and NTSC colour functionality for the Studio III family, and support for the Visicom clone. It also includes per-game controller automapping and a Jaguar-style numeric input solution to deal with the unusual controls these machines used. That may sound like an almost comically specialist project, which is precisely why it matters. RCA released the Studio II in the United States in 1977, putting it among the early programmable home videogame systems. Its crude graphics, limited sound and keypad controls were rapidly outclassed by Atari's VCS, and it consequently occupies a much smaller place in popular gaming memory. Yet unsuccessful machines are part of videogame history too. In some respects they tell us more about the development of the medium than the obvious winners because they reveal the alternative ideas manufacturers were exploring before industry conventions solidified. FPGA recreation also makes obscure systems dramatically easier to research. Original Studio II hardware is no longer something most enthusiasts can casually pick up at a local second-hand store, and its relatives can be even harder to locate. A working MiSTer implementation allows players, preservationists and developers to interact with the software rather than merely read about it. The games themselves are undeniably primitive by modern standards, but that is not a criticism when dealing with hardware approaching its fiftieth anniversary. Their simplicity is the historical evidence. The appearance of Studio II support in a contemporary FPGA ecosystem is therefore exactly the sort of development RetroGameForce wants to highlight: an obscure, commercially unsuccessful console receiving serious preservation attention decades after the market forgot it.
