Rayman Legends Retold shows off its bigger remake ambitions in a new overview trailer

Ubisoft drops an extensive overview trailer for Rayman Legends Retold, detailing a new sixth realm, four extra musical stages, dragon riding, and a December 3 launch date.

Rayman Legends Retold has returned to the news cycle with a substantial overview trailer, and Ubisoft is making a stronger case that this is more than Rayman Legends wearing a fresh coat of expensive paint. The reworking of the acclaimed 2013 platformer is being developed by Ubisoft Montpellier and Ubisoft Milan for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, with release now scheduled for December 3.

Familiar levels remain, but the remake introduces a mysterious sixth realm, four new musical stages, dragon-riding sequences, the Cave of Trials and fully voiced cinematics. Four-player local co-op survives the rebuild, while Kung Foot returns with revised controls, power-ups and configurable rules. Christophe Héral and Grant Kirkhope are involved with an expanded soundtrack mixing returning themes and new material.

It is a curious point in gaming history when a 2013 game is already old enough to receive a ground-up reimagining, but Rayman Legends itself always had one foot in classical 2D platform design. That makes Retold particularly interesting for retro-minded players: underneath all the new rendering technology sits the same obsession with timing, secrets, slapstick animation and beautifully constructed stages. Ubisoft still has to justify replacing a game that has aged remarkably well, but the latest footage at least suggests somebody remembered to bring new ideas along with the polygons.
