Rastan Amiga Conversion Reaches Version 0.57 With Important Joystick Fix
Developer basementApe updates unofficial Commodore Amiga arcade conversion Rastan to v0.57, resolving a critical weapon disappearance bug on joystick controls.
The unofficial Commodore Amiga adaptation of Taito's 1987 arcade classic Rastan has received another update, bringing the project to version 0.57. Developer basementApe is recreating the fantasy action-platformer for original Amiga hardware, with a particular emphasis on compatibility with relatively modest configurations. The latest update corrects a significant control-related problem that could cause the player's weapon to disappear when using a joystick rather than keyboard controls. Although the change sounds relatively small, it addresses an issue that could seriously disrupt normal gameplay on real hardware. Version 0.57 follows the more substantial 0.56 update, which introduced a flail power-up, an upward stabbing attack, revised boss behaviour and improvements to several backgrounds. Additional work has refined the appearance of environmental objects and adjusted difficulty. The floppy edition targets an Amiga 500 with 512KB of Chip RAM and an additional 512KB of memory. A hard-drive edition is available for machines with larger Chip RAM configurations. The project features reworked sprites and newly interpreted backgrounds rather than simply reproducing every arcade asset unchanged. Music and sound effects have been developed collaboratively, with contributions from JMD and Tsak. The developer explicitly states that no generative AI was used in production. Rastan remains an unfinished, non-commercial fan conversion, but downloadable builds are available for testing. Its progress demonstrates that carefully optimised arcade conversions can still be developed for the original Amiga 500. The barbarian has spent nearly forty years fighting monsters with a sword. At least he can now be reasonably confident that the sword will remain visible when somebody plugs in a joystick.
