Pokémon Pinball World Field Wants Nearly 500 Monsters Bouncing Around One Game Boy Advance Table
Developer xPokeJosex unveils Pokémon Pinball World Field, an expansive GBA ROM hack incorporating nearly 500 creatures from Gen 1 to 4 into Ruby & Sapphire pinball tables.
Pokémon Pinball has been abandoned by Nintendo for more than two decades, so naturally ROM hackers have decided to continue the series themselves. Developer xPokeJosex is preparing Pokémon Pinball World Field, an extensive modification of 2003's Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire for Game Boy Advance. Rather than replacing the original pinball mechanics with something unrecognisable, World Field expands the collecting side dramatically by incorporating Pokémon from generations one through four — approaching five hundred creatures rather than the comparatively modest Hoenn-focused roster of the original game.
Different modes are intended to organise the much larger collection, while a random-generation option should prevent every session from becoming an identical checklist exercise. The existing Ruby & Sapphire tables, physics and general visual identity remain recognisable, making this more of an enormous unofficial expansion than an entirely new pinball engine.
A public beta is currently planned for October 3 through HackDex, with the developer ultimately hoping to expand the idea beyond the first four generations. Nintendo has released mountains of Pokémon software since 2003 but somehow never returned to Pokémon Pinball, despite the concept requiring practically no explanation: Pokémon are round enough, Poké Balls are definitely round enough and pinball machines have been waiting patiently. World Field therefore occupies that familiar homebrew niche where fans eventually answer a twenty-three-year-old corporate question with: fine, we'll do it ourselves.
