Pokémon Evergreen Plans to Rebuild Kanto Rather Than Merely Paint the Walls Again
Gongas targets a January 2027 release for Pokémon Evergreen, a massive Game Boy Advance ROM hack featuring reconstructed Kanto maps and over 250 custom battles.
Another ambitious Pokémon ROM hack has entered the 2027 calendar. Pokémon Evergreen, developed by Gongas, is targeting January 10, 2027 and aims to substantially reconstruct the familiar Kanto adventure rather than simply bolt newer monsters onto FireRed and declare victory. The project is rebuilding every Kanto map, introducing a custom story and planning more than 250 newly designed battles. That scope is significant because Kanto may be the most frequently revisited geography in videogame history outside somebody's recreation of Doom's E1M1. Players have travelled through variations of it in Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, Crystal, FireRed, LeafGreen, HeartGold, SoulSilver, Let's Go and countless unofficial projects.
Evergreen's challenge is therefore not merely technical but creative: make Pallet Town, Viridian Forest and the surrounding region feel recognisable without making veterans feel they are completing the same commute for the fifteenth time. The announced battle count suggests the developer is putting substantial emphasis on redesigned encounters rather than relying entirely on nostalgia. As always with ROM hacks, this is an unofficial fan project and its January release target should be treated as a developer plan rather than a publisher-guaranteed date. Even so, projects of this scale demonstrate how far ROM hacking has moved beyond swapping sprites and changing starter Pokémon. Kanto has been renovated so many times that it probably requires planning permission, but apparently one more contractor has arrived.
