PlayStation Translator Chapu Reveals Meremanoid and Fox Junction English Patches Are Nearly Finished
Translator Chapu discusses near-complete English patches for Japanese PS1 adventures Meremanoid and Fox Junction, bringing obscure 1990s games to western players.
The preservation of Japan's enormous original PlayStation library has received encouraging news through a new interview with fan translator Chapu. Speaking to Time Extension on November 1, the developer discussed several ongoing projects intended to make previously untranslated Japanese games accessible to international audiences. Among the most promising developments is Meremanoid, a 1999 underwater role-playing game originally published by Xing Entertainment. Chapu reports that the complete English translation has already been played from beginning to end by multiple members of the team without significant problems. The project is now undergoing a final proofreading pass, although no confirmed public release date has been announced. Another nearly completed project is Fox Junction, a 1998 mech-themed dungeon exploration game developed by Trips. According to Chapu, its translation is also essentially finished and awaiting the final steps before release. Progress on Schrödinger no Neko is somewhat earlier, with approximately half of the script translated and major graphics-related technical problems already addressed. The interview also discusses additional projects, including The Conveni and several lesser-known PlayStation adventures. Chapu explains that translating these games involves much more than replacing Japanese dialogue with English text. Developers must frequently modify font rendering, text storage, compression systems and internal references to accommodate the translated scripts. The interview follows the successful Halloween release of The Curse of Ogaeritō, another project involving Chapu and fellow translators. The developer also emphasises the importance of human translation and collaboration within the preservation community. Japan's original PlayStation catalogue contains an extraordinary number of experimental games that never reached western markets. Thanks to dedicated enthusiasts, some of those forgotten adventures are finally preparing to leave Japan without needing to purchase an airline ticket.
