Sony's PlayStation 3 has gained another unofficial emulation option with the release of UAE4ALL2 HD, a homebrew application designed to run Commodore Amiga software on the console. Developer theheroGAC has made the project available as a free or name-your-own-price download. UAE4ALL2 belongs to a family of Amiga emulators that attempt to reproduce the behaviour of Commodore's classic computers through software. Bringing such functionality to PlayStation 3 hardware provides another way for enthusiasts to explore Amiga games without maintaining a separate vintage computer. The project is particularly interesting because Sony's console uses the unusual Cell processor architecture, which creates different development challenges from those encountered on conventional Windows or Linux computers. Compatibility and performance will depend on the emulator's implementation, selected Amiga configuration and individual software titles. Users should not assume that every game designed for different Amiga chipsets or accelerator configurations will operate identically. The release is unofficial and requires a PlayStation 3 capable of running appropriate homebrew software. Commercial Amiga system files and games are not included, and users remain responsible for obtaining them legitimately. Although the PS3 is itself now a retro platform, it remains substantially more powerful than the original Amiga computers. UAE4ALL2 HD therefore creates an entertaining historical reversal: a once-cutting-edge Sony console is being used to recreate a once-cutting-edge Commodore computer. Apparently the PlayStation 3 has decided that retirement should involve learning an entirely different operating system.
