Ocarina of Time's shiny first-print Switch 2 cover is creating a very modern form of retro panic
First-print copies of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on Switch 2 feature a limited textured foil cover, triggering sell-outs and collector scrambles reminiscent of 1998 gold carts.
Nintendo's forthcoming Switch 2 remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is already producing the sort of collector behaviour normally associated with thirty-year-old cartridges, and the game is not even out yet. The first physical print run will feature a limited textured foil cover, and demand has reportedly exceeded some retailers' expectations.
Gamer Hut commercial director Ricardo Vieira told IGN Brazil that physical preorders surpassed the company's most optimistic forecasts. The retailer had ordered what it believed was ample stock before Nintendo revealed the special first-print packaging; after the announcement, it tried to double the order, only to be told production could no longer accommodate the increase. Other retailers have experienced temporary sell-outs, while Nintendo Australia has warned that the textured cover applies only while first-print stock lasts.
The remake launches November 5, bringing the 1998 Nintendo 64 landmark to Switch 2 as part of Zelda's 40th-anniversary celebrations. There is something deeply appropriate about Ocarina of Time generating collector anxiety all over again. In 1998 people hunted gold cartridges; in 2026 they are apparently hunting shiny cardboard. Technology advances, civilisation evolves, and Zelda fans still discover that changing the colour or texture of a box is sufficient to make otherwise rational adults reach urgently for a preorder button.
