Obscure Sega Saturn Cyberpunk RPG Cyber Doll Receives Full English Translation

Gazelle and Brain's 1996 Sega Saturn cyberpunk RPG Cyber Doll has received a complete English fan translation patch, unlocking an atmospheric 32-bit sci-fi adventure formerly trapped behind a language barrier.

The Sega Saturn's Japanese library contains some of the 32-bit generation's most intriguing genre experiments, many of which never crossed the Pacific. Among the most distinctive was Cyber Doll, a 1996 cyberpunk role-playing game developed by Brain's and published by Gazelle—an offshoot company formed by former Toaplan developers shortly after the legendary arcade studio's bankruptcy. Now, thanks to a dedicated fan translation team led by romhacking veterans, Cyber Doll is fully playable in English for the very first time.

Set in a grim neo-metropolis plagued by syndicate wars and cybernetic modifications, Cyber Doll puts players in command of an elite corporate operative tasked with investigating rogue biomechanical humanoids known as Dolls. Unlike traditional fantasy turn-based RPGs of the mid-nineties, the game featured a gritty industrial aesthetic, digitized graphic novel storytelling, and an innovative real-time limb-targeting combat system where players strategically dismantle enemy hydraulics, targeting sensors, and power couplings.

The translation effort was notoriously complex due to Saturn hardware quirks and proprietary text encoding. The project team had to reverse-engineer compressed VDP2 tilemaps, reconstruct variable-width font renderers, and patch internal routine checks that previously crashed when Latin strings exceeded Japanese Kanji character lengths. In addition to dialogue, all menu interfaces, item lore databases, and in-game FMV cutscenes have been fully localized or subtitled.

The release marks another major victory for Sega Saturn preservation, shedding light on Gazelle's rare narrative output before the team transitioned back into arcade shooter projects. The translation patch is distributed as a clean xdelta file compatible with original hardware via ODEs (Fenrir, Satiator, SAROO) or emulation on Mednafen and Beetle-Saturn.
