One of Nintendo's strangest hardware experiments has become considerably more accessible through MiSTer FPGA. An updated MiSTer Main binary now enables Nintendo 64DD support in the platform's N64 core, according to RetroRGB's 6 September hardware roundup. The 64DD was a Japan-only expansion for the Nintendo 64 that used rewritable magnetic disks rather than ordinary cartridges. Nintendo intended the system to expand what its console could do with larger writable storage, additional software possibilities and online-connected features, but repeated delays and limited commercial adoption turned it into one of the company's most famous hardware curiosities. Only a small library reached consumers before the project disappeared, leaving original units highly collectible and making authentic exploration expensive. That is what makes FPGA support significant. Preserving the Nintendo 64 itself is relatively straightforward for collectors because tens of millions of consoles exist. Preserving the experience of a peripheral released in far smaller quantities and tied to unusual media is another matter. The 64DD's library includes titles and creative software that never received ordinary cartridge releases, meaning emulating or reproducing the peripheral is essential if that branch of Nintendo history is to remain practically accessible. MiSTer's N64 implementation has developed rapidly, and adding 64DD support demonstrates that developers are moving beyond the basic cartridge console toward the awkward peripherals and edge cases that define genuinely comprehensive preservation. The feature will naturally attract owners interested in Nintendo's more experimental software, but it also has value for historians because the 64DD represents a road the company might have travelled much further down. Writable media, network services and user-generated content all became central to later gaming, even though Nintendo's late-1990s implementation struggled commercially. Original 64DD hardware remains desirable, and FPGA reproduction does not eliminate the appeal of owning the real machine. What it does is remove scarcity as a barrier to understanding it. For one of Nintendo's rarest systems, that is a major step forward.
