A new project called NeoConnect VirtualBus is attempting to resurrect one of the more unusual capabilities found in portions of the Neo Geo ecosystem: direct communication between separate systems. Highlighted in RetroRGB's 6 September MiSTer roundup, VirtualBus is designed to restore machine-to-machine communication across original hardware and emulated or FPGA-based environments. Instead of approaching multiplayer exclusively through conventional internet netplay, the project recreates the concept of physically linking systems together. Particularly interesting is the reported ability to bridge different environments, including MAME and MiSTer, using ESP-based endpoints. That opens the possibility of recreating linked setups without requiring two identical original machines. Linked arcade and console configurations occupy an awkward position in preservation. The game software itself may be dumped perfectly, yet part of the intended experience can still disappear if the communication hardware or networking behaviour is not reproduced. Racing games are the most obvious examples, but several other arcade platforms experimented with multi-machine configurations that were rarely encountered in domestic settings. Neo Geo is usually remembered as a brutally expensive home console sharing its architecture with SNK's MVS arcade platform, but the wider family included capabilities that many modern players have never used. VirtualBus therefore addresses something beyond simple game compatibility. It treats the communication between systems as part of the hardware worth preserving. The cross-platform element is especially clever because it acknowledges how people actually engage with retro hardware in 2026. One enthusiast may own an original machine, another may use MiSTer and a preservation setup may rely on MAME. If all of them can participate in compatible linked environments, scarce physical hardware stops being a strict prerequisite. The project is still one enthusiasts will want to follow as compatibility develops, but its appearance demonstrates how sophisticated preservation work has become. The industry spent years asking whether we could reproduce individual games accurately. Projects like VirtualBus increasingly ask a harder question: can we reproduce the complete circumstances in which those games were designed to operate?
