MiSTer FPGA has gained one of its stranger capabilities: playing DVDs. RetroRGB's 6 September roundup reports that developer Joe Daniels has released a dedicated DVD core capable of handling both physical DVD discs and DVD image files. Installation documentation is available through the project's GitHub repository, although encrypted commercial DVDs require an additional decryption component that is not supplied with the core. At first glance, using an FPGA retro-gaming platform as a DVD player sounds like solving a problem nobody currently has. Cheap DVD players are everywhere, modern consoles can handle optical media and software playback on a computer is hardly difficult. Yet the project is technically fascinating because MiSTer increasingly functions as a laboratory for hardware recreation rather than merely a box for old videogames. DVD playback combines storage interfaces, decoding, timing, video output and filesystem behaviour in ways very different from running an 8-bit console core. Successfully implementing it broadens what developers know can be achieved within the platform. There is also a preservation angle. DVD-Video was one of the dominant consumer media formats of the late 1990s and 2000s, and the hardware that played those discs is itself becoming part of retro technology. Enthusiasts who preserve consoles, computers and LaserDisc systems increasingly regard media playback hardware as part of the same technological history. The MiSTer implementation is therefore an unusual bridge between retro gaming and home-video preservation. Nobody needs to retire a perfectly functional standalone DVD player tomorrow, and users dealing with encrypted discs should understand the legal and technical issues surrounding decryption in their jurisdiction. But as an engineering project, the core is another example of MiSTer developers refusing to stay inside the platform's original perceived boundaries. Once the community had recreated consoles, arcade boards and home computers, apparently somebody looked at a stack of DVDs and thought: why not those as well? In retro technology, that is often exactly how the most entertaining projects begin.
