Mega Cat Makes Two Real NES and SNES Games Free Enough to Cost Absolutely Nothing

Mega Cat Studios offers digital downloads of NES adventure Reknum Souls Adventure and SNES shooter Super Fanger for free on itch.io under a pay-what-you-want promotion.

Mega Cat Studios has temporarily created a rather attractive pricing tier for people whose retro-game budget has been devastated by cartridge collecting: name your own price, including zero. The studio's NES action-platformer Reknum Souls Adventure and SNES top-down shooter Super Fanger are currently downloadable through itch.io on that basis.

Reknum Souls Adventure originally arrived in 2022 and combines exploration, towns, dungeons, platforming, combat, puzzles, bosses, hidden items and unlockable abilities in an intentionally traditional 8-bit adventure structure. Super Fanger is much newer, having launched earlier in 2026 for SNES, and takes a more immediate arcade-shooter approach.

Importantly, these are not merely PC games wearing pixel-art costumes. Both exist as software for Nintendo's original hardware and both can also be purchased as physical cartridges from Mega Cat, although the remarkable 'pay nothing if you really insist' arrangement applies to the digital downloads rather than boxes, boards and plastic that somebody had to manufacture.

Releases like these demonstrate how strange and healthy the modern aftermarket scene has become. The NES launched in North America more than forty years ago and the SNES followed in 1991, yet developers are still producing commercial software for both. Nintendo stopped supporting the machines decades ago; apparently nobody remembered to tell the release calendar.
