MiSTer FPGA development is moving into increasingly ambitious territory with ongoing work on an Apple Macintosh Quadra 800 core. RetroRGB's 6 September roundup reports that the developing implementation features a Motorola 68040-class CPU running at 33 MHz and can already run Apple's System 7 and System 8 environments. More unusually, A/UX, Apple's historical Unix operating system, is now able to boot as well. The Quadra 800 originally belonged to a very different class of machine from the 8-bit computers and early consoles that formed much of MiSTer's initial appeal. It was a serious 1990s Macintosh workstation built around the 68040 generation, meaning a faithful FPGA implementation has to deal with a substantially more complicated computer architecture than an Atari 2600 or ZX Spectrum. That makes the project interesting even before considering software compatibility. A/UX support adds another layer of historical value. Apple's Unix system is far less familiar to general users than classic Mac OS, yet it represents an important stage in the company's long relationship with Unix technologies before Mac OS X transformed the mainstream Macintosh platform years later. Being able to boot it through a programmable hardware recreation gives enthusiasts a much easier route into software that would otherwise demand ageing and increasingly specialist original equipment. The Quadra work also illustrates where FPGA retro computing is heading. The boundary of what enthusiasts consider practical to recreate continues moving forward through time as hardware resources, development techniques and documentation improve. Systems that once seemed too complicated for projects such as MiSTer are steadily entering the conversation. Nobody should interpret an in-development core as a complete substitute for a real Quadra 800 yet; compatibility, peripherals, timing and edge cases still matter. But even at this stage, seeing System 7, System 8 and A/UX functioning on a MiSTer implementation is a remarkable preservation milestone. Classic Macintosh enthusiasts now have another project worth watching very closely.
