Los Bingueros Brings Spanish Bingo-Hall Comedy to the ZX Spectrum
Los Bingueros brings 1979 Spanish cinema comedy to the 48K ZX Spectrum, recreating vibrant Madrid bingo-hall culture through Sinclair graphics and digitized audio.
The ZX Spectrum homebrew scene has produced shooters, platformers, adventures and conversions of practically everything imaginable, so naturally somebody has now made a game about Spanish bingo culture. Los Bingueros, created by Jordi for the 48K ZX Spectrum, draws inspiration from the 1979 Spanish comedy film of the same name starring Andrés Pajares and Fernando Esteso. The game recreates a bingo session through the gloriously constrained audiovisual language of Sinclair's machine, incorporating graphics, music and samples originally created by asteroidezx. It is an unusually culturally specific piece of homebrew, and that is precisely what makes it interesting.
Modern retro development is often at its best when it stops trying to imitate globally famous arcade games and instead uses old hardware to preserve the peculiar humour, references and everyday culture surrounding the machines in particular countries. Spain's relationship with the ZX Spectrum was especially strong during the 1980s, producing a major domestic software industry and a catalogue with its own visual and thematic identity. A bingo game referencing a late-1970s Spanish comedy therefore feels considerably more authentic to that history than another generic cyber-ninja platformer would. The project has also been identified as involving AI-assisted coding, a detail worth recording given current arguments about how such tools are entering homebrew development. The Spectrum is approaching half a century old and apparently remains capable of starting completely new arguments while calling out bingo numbers.
