Like a Dragon Kenzan Finally Receives English Fan Translation Eighteen Years After Japanese PlayStation 3 Release
After two years of development, translator Madjima and team release a complete English fan translation for Sega's 2008 PS3 exclusive Like a Dragon: Kenzan!.
One of the most elusive entries in Sega's Like a Dragon franchise has finally become accessible to English-speaking players. Like a Dragon: Kenzan!, originally released exclusively in Japan for PlayStation 3 in 2008, has received an unofficial English translation following approximately two years of development. The project involves several contributors who previously worked on translating the PlayStation 3 version of Like a Dragon: Ishin!, including translator Madjima. Kenzan takes the familiar characters and dramatic storytelling associated with Sega's long-running crime series and relocates them to seventeenth-century Japan. Its protagonist is a fictionalised interpretation of legendary swordsman Miyamoto Musashi, who assumes the identity Kiryu Kazumanosuke after becoming entangled in a political conspiracy. The story follows his life in Kyoto's Gion district, where he works as a bodyguard while investigating the circumstances that forced him into exile. Although the historical setting differs considerably from modern Kamurocho, the game retains recognisable elements of the franchise, including dramatic confrontations, exploration and character-driven storytelling. Unlike Ishin!, which received an official modern remake, Kenzan has never been officially localised or rereleased internationally. The new fan translation therefore fills a significant gap in the series' international accessibility. The translation team reports that the project was completed without generative AI. Players should consult the project's documentation for compatible game versions and installation requirements. Eighteen years after its original release, Kenzan is finally ready to tell its story to a much larger audience. Apparently the samurai simply needed a little more time to learn English.
