Leaf OS, an alternative operating system for the handheld, has been updated with support for the machine's previously underused 120Hz display capability along with black frame insertion modes intended to improve motion clarity. Reported on 7 September, the development is especially noteworthy because the Pocket 1 is a relatively inexpensive device rather than a premium FPGA system or high-end Android handheld. The machine combines a 720p screen with Rockchip RK3556 hardware and typically sells somewhere between roughly and depending on configuration and retailer. Leaf OS now enables the display to operate at 120Hz, allowing 60fps games to use black frame insertion at an effective 60fps cadence. Black frame insertion works by inserting dark frames between displayed game frames, reducing sample-and-hold motion blur on modern LCD panels and producing motion that can feel closer to a CRT. There is also a 100Hz mode specifically useful for PAL-era software running at 50 frames per second. That detail makes the update considerably more interesting than simply advertising a larger refresh-rate number. European home computers and consoles frequently ran at 50Hz rather than the roughly 60Hz timing common in North America and Japan, and modern emulation devices do not always treat those differences elegantly. A 100Hz output provides an exact multiple of 50Hz, enabling PAL software to retain appropriate pacing while still benefiting from black frame insertion. Installation is described as relatively straightforward through a drag-and-drop firmware process, although users need to make sure the stock firmware has first been updated to at least version 1.2.0.98. The story also illustrates how much influence community firmware now has on retro hardware. Manufacturers increasingly ship capable displays and processors without fully exploiting every feature, leaving independent developers to improve latency, scaling, refresh rates, emulation configuration and user interfaces after launch. A sub- handheld gaining CRT-oriented 50Hz and 60Hz motion options would have sounded like extravagant enthusiast territory only a few years ago. Today it is another example of the rapid technical arms race taking place among retro handhelds. For European players in particular, the PAL-specific 100Hz mode could make Leaf OS considerably more valuable than a generic performance upgrade.
