Laszlovania Brings Castlevania-Inspired Vampire Comedy to Nintendo DS and Web Browsers

Edward La Barbera releases Laszlovania, an unofficial Castlevania parody starring Matt Berry's vampire Laszlo Cravensworth on Nintendo DS and browser.

Nintendo DS owners have received an unexpected new adventure inspired by the television comedy What We Do in the Shadows. Developer Edward La Barbera has created Laszlovania, an unofficial action-adventure combining the show's supernatural humour with gameplay inspired by early Castlevania titles. Players assume the role of Laszlo Cravensworth, the eccentric vampire portrayed by Matt Berry in the television series. The adventure follows Laszlo as he encounters familiar characters, battles supernatural enemies and attempts to avoid responsibilities whenever possible. According to the developer, completing the game takes approximately one hour, making it a relatively compact experience rather than an enormous exploration-driven adventure. Its visual presentation draws inspiration from classic handheld and console games, using a deliberately retro aesthetic suited to the source material's gothic setting. The game is playable directly in a web browser, while a downloadable Nintendo DS ROM is available for approximately five dollars. The DS version can be used with compatible emulators or suitable flash cartridges on original hardware. La Barbera previously created several unusual fan projects, including Frasier Fantasy, and Laszlovania continues that tradition of adapting unexpected television and film properties into videogames. The developer states that the project was created without generative AI. As an unofficial adaptation, Laszlovania should not be confused with a licensed release from the television programme's rights holders. Nevertheless, it demonstrates the creativity of independent developers working with historical Nintendo platforms. The Nintendo DS continues receiving new software long after its commercial retirement. Apparently even vampires have discovered that two screens are better than one.
